really am asking for some help in looking for some relatives of ours -- my days off dont conincide with your days open -- I am interested in Mrs. Octaaf DeDobbelaere (Elodie Janssens) - she dies around April 18, 1944 - we are trying to find out how many children there were the the family and were they all might have ended up - she would be my G-G grandmother - any help would be appreciated but if no one has the time, I would understand -

I took pleasure in visiting this site, and I was quite surprised by the number of people looking for their Belgian roots!
The VVF (Flemish Society for Genealogy) of the Meetjesland has a free, online searchable database with information about more than 500000 family names in the Meetjesland (=mainly the north-western part of East Flanders (ADEGEM, ASSENEDE, EEKLO, KAPRIJKE, KNESSELARE, LEMBEKE, LOTENHULLE, MALDEGEM, MIDDELBURG, URSEL, WAARSCHOOT and ZOMERGEM), but also including some villages in the north-eastern part of West Flanders. (BEERNEM, POEKE, OEDELEM and SINT-JORIS).
Please feel free to pay us a visit on :
-> http://vvf.debaets.be/
click on 'Digitale Bronnen'(='Digital Sources') and enter any family name...
A full list of the indexed sources (in Flemish) is available on
-> http://vvf.debaets.be/bewerkingen.htm
We also have a forum (in Dutch, but where many people will be glad to help in English!)...
I myself am one of the grand-sons of Jules Van Vooren, who lived in Moline between 1910 and 1924. (Helen Van Vooren, my mother, was actually born there in 1917!)
Jules and his brother Edmond both worked for John Deere (amongst others) before they returned to Belgium in the late 20's. Jules and his wife Helena also had a boarding house in Moline, where many Belgians found a provisional housing before they settled...
Maurice -still another of the Van Vooren brothers, who was married to Louise De Bruyckere- also emigrated from Adegem to the US. He died in Moline in 1930. Maurice and Louise were the parents of Alyne Van Vooren, widow of Alfred Demeurisse. (Alyne died only a couple of years ago, in 2002).
One of the cousins of Jules and Edmond -equally called Edmond Van Vooren- was married to Celina Van Hooreweghe. They stayed in the US, so I still have some cousins out there in the Quad Cities
We have some nice pictures (some from Moline in the 20's) and documents online about the Van Vooren family, on
-> http://www.debaets.be/arcvv/
We also have a family line (in English) of the Van Hooreweghe family on :
-> http://www.debaets.be/vanhoorewege.htm
I hope this may be of interest to you...

I am looking for someone who can do research in Aalter. I am looking for ancestors of Carolus Boucquaert (born 1785-1795) in Aalter. I have been able to trace my ancestry this far and enjoyed a wonderful visit to Aalter last summer, but ran out of time and did not want to impose anymore on their very helpful director Msr. Filip Bastiaen. I am just interested to see how far back the name Boucquaert can be traced in Aalter. Thank you!

I just came across your website and am hopeful that I may find some contacts to my family from Belgium as I know some of them settled in Moline, IL. I am looking for any decendants of Camiel and Leonie (VanWelden) Carton. Camiel, who was my great grandfather's brother, was born circa 1860. He arrived Dec. 19, 1905 at Ellis Island from Antwerp Belgium aboard the Finland, his place of residence was listed as Pitthem, age 45 and he was traveling to see his brother, Julius (my great grandfather), in St. Louis, MO. Camiel's wife, Leonie (Leona) VanWelden Carton, born circa 1863, arrived at Ellis Island Aug. 15, 1911 aboard the Kroonland from Antwerp Belgium, her place of residence was listed as Pitthem, she was traveling to her husband in St. Charles, Missouri and arrived with her children, Irma Zulma, and Achiel. Another ship manifest, the Rotterdam, show both Camiel and Leonie arriving Dec. 18, 1919 at Ellis Island from Boulogne, Pas-de-Calais, France, and lists their place of residence as Moline, IL and Leonie's relative as a sister, Silvia or Lilvia VanWehlen of Pitthem. Camiel died Jan. 12, 1936 in Moline, IL, his death certificate lists his birthplace as Pitthem Belgium and his father's name as John but no mother's name. My greatgrandfather, Julius Carton, was born November 13, 1858 or 1859 and married Catherine Tillman on May 29 or 31, 1899 in St. Charles, MO. He died April 20, 1912 in St. Charles, Missouri, his death certificate also lists his birthplace as Pitthem Belgium, no father's name but his mother was listed as Virginia Carton.

Hello,
My name is marc Dazé and I live in ottawa, Canada. I have done our family tree research and found that our family is actually linked to the "Dhaese" family name.
Over the years the spelling has changed... from Dhaese to Dhase to D'Hase to Dase to Dazé.
The first D'hase I found was in loudon France but seems the family originated from Dhaese and there first born was born Paul D'Hase. I am not sure why the name changed over the years....Maybe the French wanted a more French name?
Can anyone help me find dig further?
Please email dazemad2001@hotmail.com.

Object: De Roo / Deroo family
I'm Patrick Deroover from Belgium and I'm doing genealogical searches about the family DE ROO.
As you can see on my website my genealogical searches is not only done in Belgium and France, but due to emigration of different families it goes also in USA and Canada. It would be great if you could procure me actual e-mail addresses from De Roo family members, or to tell them what I'm doing. Thanks for your help, Patrick Deroover e-mail: Hof-ter-Poorte@tiscali.be website: http://www.Hof-ter-Poorte.be

In the '30's in Venice, Italy, my grandfather bought a gorgeous painting done in 1931 by the Belgian artist Leon DEVOS. We now have it and would like to find out more about the artist and the value of this painting. Anyone have any ideas? We have discovered that he was a founder of a style (school) of painting, but that's about it. We hope this painting should be returned to Belgium as part of its heritage.

My grandfather’s twin sister Felicita-Theresia DECUYPER (born in HOOGLEDE, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium, 23 august 1882) came over to America around 1910 together with her husband Hector DEHULSTER (born in HOOGLEDE about 1880).
According the Ellis Island records, I found out that Cyrille DEHULSTER, Hector’s brother, emigrated to America on board the SS Finland leaving Antwerp on March, the 15th 1913 and arriving in New-York on 27th of March 1913. According the ship’s manifest, he went to meet his brother Hector in Rock Island, Illinois, 5 Ave, #2610 .
My grandfather, Filibert DECUYPER, born in Hooglede 23 August 1882, also emigrated to America on board the SS Olympic and arrived in New York May 21, 1913. He also went to his friend (brother-in-law) Hector DEHULSTER. In 1914, just before the World War I started, Filibert DECUYPER came back to Belgium. He died in 1957.
In early 1940s my family got a letter from Felicita DECUYPER then living in Miles City, Montana, with her partner Ivo SABO, born in Caprijcke (Belgium) in July 1884 (?), who also emigrated to America on board the SS Kroonland (Majestic) and arrived in New-York the 19th of December 1907. On the ship’s manifest of Ivo SABO was mentioned following address: Moline, Illinois, 16 Ave, # 427. Since early 1940s, we had no more contacts.
I would be very glad if anyone could give me information about Felicita DECUYPER and Hector DEHULSTER (when and on board what ship they arrived in America (I checked the Ellis Island records without result), where did they live and die, are there descendants, …) and about Ivo SABO (where did he live and die, are there descendants of him with Felicita DECUYPER, …)
Any info would be greatly appreciated. Noël Decuyper

My name is Jim Van De Veire. I am the son of Harold Van De Veire. He was one of eight children. His father was Leo Van De Veire, who was born on May 8, 1879 and died in St. Charles, Illinois on August 26, 1943.Leo came to the United States twice, the second time was in 1909. He arrived at Ellis Island on October 27, 1909 on a ship called the Kroonland with his wife and two children. The children who came with them from Belgium were Emil (2 years) and Julia (10 Months). They came through the port of Antwerp, and lived in Lembeke. His wife was Emma Van Hecke, who was born on June 29, 1886 and died in St. Charles, Illinois on February 3, 1937. She was the daughter of Ivo Van Hecke and Prudence De Cock. They were married in Lembeke.His father and mother were Joannes Baptist Van De Veire, and Urgela De Rau. Urgela lived from August 6, 1833 through November 18, 1915. Joannes died on May 7, 1894. I do not know when he was born. He and Urgela were married on February 20. 1863.Joannes's father was probably Donatus Van De (Der) Veire.I would appreciate any information about my family that you may be able to provide.Sincerely,Jim R. Excellent site. Thank you for putting this together. My greatgrandfather, Edmond DUPON and his brother Joseph, emigrated from Ichtegem and arrived in Ellis Island separately in 1902 and then lived in Moline (1823 13th Street) working for the WELVAERT family as laborers. Later that year they moved to Chicago. After returning to Belgium, living briefly in South Africa and in London, the brothers returned in 1904 and both married in Chicago in 1905. For those doing genealogy, my ancestor surnames from Ichtegem, W.VL. include: DUPON, LANNOYE, DEKNOCK, DE PAEPE, VAN MAELE, VERMEERSCH, VAN STEENKISTE, SABBE, SPRIET, VERHELLE, VIVEY, etc.And from Koekelare, W.VL.: BAECKELANDT, DEVREKER, BEUSELINCK, VAN RYCKEGHEM, INGELBRECHT, MOERMAN, HUGHE, VAN DEN ABEELE, HARDY, DE BEUCKELAERE, DE JONCKHEERE, RICHOUX, etc.Please feel free to contact me at debendevan@hotmail.com.Met vriendelijke groeten uit Chicago

Hello, I was wondering anyone had any information about the Vandeweghe clan. Our family, when coming over to America, had to leave some children in Belgium; they never made it over. After looking a phone book pertaining the city where the children were left hoping to find some residences holding the name of Vandeweghe, we werer astounded to find many. If anyone could contact me if they have ever heard of this happening in their family, please let me know! Oh yes, great site!

I have really enjoyed this webside, its very informative and i really enjoyed reading about the Rolle Bolle, which is a very traditional game in the village were i was born in ADEGEM. A couple of years ago, there was a World Championship overthere.I was also able to trace our Van Landschoot ancestors as far back as 1850 in Milan,Rock island. Ambroos and Mary Van landschoot immigrated with 4 adult children in 1850 to this area.2 of them were Civil war soldiers. Probate case files (West. I'm a Belgian student Dutch and English, working on a presentation on the Belgian emigrants in the States and in Canada, in the period 1850-1930. Inspired by a book of Dirk Musschoot that has come out recently, "Wij gaan naar Amerika" ( we're going to America ). Apart from the book material it's been extremely interesting to me to read about the living descendants now. Being a ( young ) Belgian, I never heard of Rolle Bolle, unless you mean petanque??? Thanks, you've been a great help to me!

Congratulations with the website. It's really amazing to know that Belgian immigrants still are keeping their traditions and contacts.I'm living in West Vlaanderen and I'm doing some genealogic research on my family. I'm looking for descendents of Alois STEEN, born in WOUMEN and living in KLERKEN who immigrated in 1900 to Moline (Rail Rd Av 1028).During the same year he was joined by his brother Richard and in 1910 by his brother Emile, who came over together with his bride Eugenie (maiden name VANDAMME)only three weeks after their marriage. Finally in 1916 his mother Louise (maiden name JAECQUES), together with his sister Julia and child Michel fleed war stroken Europe from Bordeaux. At that time they lived in 399 10th Street 4th Av Moline (ought to be East Moline I think and today perhaps Silvis city). If somebody is aware of possibele descendants, would you please so kind to inform me ?

So, maybe some day I will be able to help some in their search for their ancestors. Look once at my website, option 'Emigrants to America' : a database with the emigrants from the Diksmuide-area, growing weekly.

Great site. My great grandparents left Maldegem in 1894 for the wonderful area of Bureau County. Fantastic part of the state (also my birthplace!!) You honor all Belgians with your good work.

Another great site to visit in one's quest for information on Belgian ancestry. Our Vignery's came to Illinois in the 1870s, then went on to Kansas. Thanks for your hard work and efforts to connect us all.
